Research Summary

This study examines why obsolete or abandoned road and railway infrastructure is being regenerated as linear parks and pedestrian-oriented public spaces. Eight domestic and international cases, including the Promenade Plantée, Cheonggyecheon, Seoullo 7017, and the High Line, were compared in terms of local issues, public discourse, and regeneration strategies.

The findings show that industrial infrastructure has been reinterpreted as modern industrial heritage, while its linear and elevated forms support new place identities and continuous pedestrian movement. Such projects transform automobile- and railway-oriented spaces into shared civic spaces, providing a regeneration strategy for expanding green areas and public realms in dense urban centers.
