Research Summary
This study analyzes the architectural formation and spatial evolution of Seoul Station over approximately 110 years to explain the reciprocal adaptation between station architecture and its urban context. Three major stages shaped the complex: the construction of Gyeongseong Station in 1923, a privately financed station behind it in 1987, and an additional mixed-use station in 2004.
These projects created a configuration in which several station buildings coexist, while passenger, commercial, and administrative functions became spatially differentiated and the center of activity shifted. The study shows that Seoul Station’s evolution was not simply a sequence of individual building projects, but the outcome of continuous interaction between architectural elements and the surrounding urban structure.
