Research Summary
This study analyzes the background, process, and spatial effects of Berlin’s railway network restructuring and central station development after German reunification. The project sought to integrate the divided railway system by constructing a new central station on the former Lehrter Bahnhof site, where north–south and east–west routes intersected.
However, its centralized approach insufficiently reflected the roles of existing stations and established patterns of everyday urban land use, resulting in functional limitations despite substantial investment. The study argues that railway-led spatial integration must be grounded in historically developed patterns of spatial use and socioeconomic benefits rather than political symbolism or centralized planning alone. These findings offer implications for future railway connections and interchange planning in preparation for Korean reunification.
