Research Summary
This study examines how the Suryeo Line, closed in 1972, influenced Suwon’s urban structure and street pattern after liberation through three historical periods. Until 1962, the railway acted as a physical boundary to the expanding commercial district along Maesan-ro between Paldalmun and Suwon Station.
From 1962 to the period around its closure, it connected the Gyeongbu railway and expressway and contributed to the formation of a major urban axis. After closure, removal of the railway barrier enabled the urban area and street network to expand, yet the former alignment continued to shape Suwon’s newly formed grid-like street pattern. The findings demonstrate that abandoned railway infrastructure can leave a lasting spatial imprint on urban form.
