Research Summary

This study examines the role and significance of the Tokyo Station restoration project in relation to the regeneration of the Daimaruyu district. Rather than merely reproducing the historical appearance of the station building, the project reinforced the temporal depth and historical context of the surrounding urban area.

It also functioned as part of a continuing regeneration process, encouraging new development linked to the district’s historical identity. By preserving Tokyo Station’s transportation function while integrating historical elements into everyday use, the project moved beyond museum-style conservation and created a living historic landscape that citizens can see, experience, and use.
