Research Summary
This study examines how the historic commercial district of Les Halles in Paris was transformed into a three-dimensional complex integrating commercial activities and urban railway transfers. Based on maps, drawings, photographs, and planning reports, it traces the district’s spatial evolution. Les Halles functioned as a major urban marketplace until the nineteenth century, while redevelopment between 1969 and 1985 relocated the market and introduced underground spaces connected to urban railways.
Since 2002, it has been reorganized as an integrated transfer hub emphasizing mobility and connectivity. This transformation combined market and transportation functions through an underground plaza, three-dimensional open spaces, and improved connections between ground-level and underground pedestrian routes, converting privatized public space into a shared urban realm.
