Research Summary

This study examines Toyama’s public-transport-oriented compact city project and identifies factors contributing to its urban regeneration. Developed in response to low-carbon growth, population aging, and demographic decline, the project reorganized the city around an integrated railway and bus network. Residential development and urban functions were encouraged along transit corridors to increase the population served by public transport.

The introduction of LRT and the restructuring of existing services improved accessibility to the city center and concentrated daily activities along public transport axes. The study demonstrates that sustainable regeneration in regional cities requires an integrated strategy connecting transport improvements, land use, residential location, and downtown revitalization.
