Research Summary
This study analyzes the application and institutional limitations of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) in urban railway stations and proposes improvement guidelines. Relevant regulations and design standards were reviewed, and eight stations on Seoul Metropolitan Subway Line 1, from Osan College Station to Seonghwan Station, were surveyed. The level of CPTED implementation was compared according to station space, design principle, and circulation route.
Ticket offices demonstrated relatively high CPTED performance, whereas entrances, stairs, and some vertical circulation routes remained vulnerable. Natural surveillance, territorial reinforcement, and clarity were generally well implemented.
The study recommends extending crime-prevention building standards to urban railway stations, improving visibility through CCTV cameras, signs, and convex mirrors, minimizing blind spots, and establishing more specific policies and regulations for increasingly complex station environments.
