Research Summary

This study compares railway-based urban restructuring in Berlin and Ho Chi Minh City, both of which experienced national division and reunification, to identify implications for post-reunification planning. In both cities, the use and reorganization of existing railway systems became a major instrument for spatial integration, while stations and surrounding areas were assigned new urban-center and public roles.

The comparison shows that station-centered restructuring can reconnect fragmented urban areas and establish integrated development axes. The study therefore suggests that future planning for Korean reunification should incorporate the use of existing railways, network reorganization, and coordinated redevelopment of stations and their surrounding districts.
