Research Summary
This study analyzes railway-station and station-area regeneration in six Japanese regional cities—Hakata, Kumamoto, Kagoshima-Chuo, Oita, Toyama, and Iwamizawa—to identify approaches applicable to Korean local cities. The cases demonstrate how declining city centers affected by suburbanization and population outflow were restructured around railways.
Their shared characteristics include station-centered interchange systems, active connections with regional tourist attractions, and high-density mixed-use commercial development around stations. The findings suggest that railways should be treated not merely as transport facilities but as regeneration hubs integrating urban functions and land use, offering a strategic model for station-area renewal in small and medium-sized cities.
