Research Summary

This study examines how commercial space in the northern premises of Seoul Station was formed and transformed in response to changes in transport systems, station functions, and the surrounding commercial environment across four periods: 1900–1939, 1939–1969, 1969–1989, and after 1989.

A central wholesale market initially developed north of Gyeongseong Station based on railway, tram, and logistics activity around Namdaemun. After liberation, the shift from rail to automobiles and the transition from traditional markets to supermarkets contributed to its demolition after 1975. Following the privately financed station development in 1989, commercial functions were absorbed into the station and integrated with railway services. This process demonstrates how changes in station functions continuously reshaped the location, form, and everyday role of commercial space.
